Our Lady of Sorrows

God wants to set you free from your addiction!

Marie Claire of Kibeho Rwanda. Years later she was murdered in the Rwandan genocide.

In 1982 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to several school children at Kibeho, Rwanda. One of the visionaries, Marie Claire (who was murdered years later in the Rwanda genocide) received these promises from Our Lady to those who prayed the Seven Sorrows Rosary. These promises are listed below:

*With the recitation of Seven Sorrows Rosary, the hardest hearts shall change, if you pray it for yourself or for others.

*By the recitation of the Seven Sorrows Rosary, you shall be freed from obsessions and addictions.

*This rosary when said from the heart, it will win for us true repentance of our sins and free our souls from guilt and remorse.

*You shall obtain whatever you ask for through this rosary, praying this rosary from the heart.

*More than ever, the world needs the Seven Sorrows Rosary.

Our Lady promised to free us from our addictions and obsessions if we prayed the Seven Sorrows Rosary from the heart. This is the catch, if we can call it that. The Seven Sorrows Rosary is not a mantra or a magic incantation. Our Lady’s condition, that we pray it from the heart means that we must pray the rosary while reverently reflecting on Our Lady’s seven sorrows. By meditating on these we are also meditating on the Passion of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Can it be that easy?

Well, here’s an example from the bible of a man who was healed from leprosy by doing something easy.

The Story of the Naaman the Syrian contained in 2 Kings Ch 5.

Naaman was a commander in the Syrian Army. Naaman’s servant encouraged him to visit Elisha, a great prophet in Israel who she believed could cure her master by the power of God. Naaman agreed to visit Elisha in Israel. When Naaman tried to visit Elisha, the prophet refused to see him but sent him a letter telling him to bathe in the Jordan seven times and he would be cured.
Naaman being a proud man was enraged by this saying that he could have just as easily washed in the rivers of Damascus, his home town. His servant pleaded with him by saying, “If the prophet had asked you to do something difficult you would have done it, so why not do the easy task anyway?”  Naaman agreed to this and went and bathed in the river seven times and was healed!

The moral of the story is that can be a lot easier than you think to be cured. God wants you to be set free from your addiction. IT IS HIS WILL, but you must want to be set free as well. Too many people love their addiction and only half heartedly want to be set free. You must hate your addiction, whatever it is, because of how it enslaves and destroys you and harms all those you love.

Here’s the plan.

Resolve to say the Seven Sorrows daily from the heart for 40 days. Ask Our Lady for the grace to continue. For good measure, pray the normal rosary as well. This should take you no more than an hour a day. Do you think Naaman the Syrian would have refused to pray for an hour a day if Elisha had asked him to do it?

How much do you hate what your addiction (drugs, alcohol, food, pornography etc) is doing to you? Would you give up an hour each day to be set free?

Don’t just pray the rosary mechanically. Talk with Mary your mother. Plead with her to set you free. She will intercede for you to Jesus her Son. Mary never asks for anything that is not God’s will and Jesus can never refuse His mother. This was illustrated most beautifully at the wedding feast of Cana where the wedding guests had run out of wine. Mary wanted to spare embarrassment to the hosts of the wedding and asked Jesus to fix the situation. Jesus did not really want to do this and responded to his mother with “Do you not know that My hour has not yet come?” However, he went on to perform the first of His miracles in the bible, the turning of the water into wine.

A great saint of the Catholic Church, St Alphonsus Ligouri has this famous quote:

“He who does not give up prayer cannot possibly continue to offend God habitually. Either he will give up prayer or he will stop sinning.”

So whatever you don’t stop praying. Even if you fall, continue to pray. You can be sure that satan will hate you praying because he is afraid that he will lose you (he will), so he will do everything in his power to tempt and discourage you, but the grace of Our Lady will prevail. The only way that satan can win, is for you to stop praying.

Does it work?

I have set up this website at the request of a friend of mine, David, whose testimony will follow. Dave has been a devout practicing catholic all of his life but for the last ten years of his life he has been addicted to pornography.  Recently he approached me and told me his story on the condition that he remain anonymous. He told me how he had been addicted to pornography and how Our Lady had set him free. He wanted to show his gratitude by building a website to proclaim what Mary had done for him. He didn’t know how to do this and asked me to help him.

Here is his story:

Testimony of “David”, ex porn addict, aged 55 from Brisbane, Australia.

I am a married man with several grown up children and am employed in one of the professions. I am involved in catholic charismatic renewal, a frequent mass goer and until four months ago a pornography addict.

How could this happen?

Ever since I can remember I had an above average interest in sex, and as I grew up and became an adult, sins of the flesh were my commonest, almost routine sin that I confessed to when I went to reconciliation. With the advent of the internet age, pornography became instantly accessible and there was no need any more to hide books, magazines, dvd’s etc. I really believe that it was this easy access on the internet that turned me into an addict.

Of course, after every incident I was filled with shame and remorse and self loathing. I would rush off to confession but within two or three weeks I would fall again. There was a constant cycle of sin and repentance. I begged the Lord to free me from my disordered sexual desire, but gradually my sin-repentance cycle decreased from a few weeks to a few days. I absolutely hated myself but loved the short lived thrill that porn provided.

While surfing the net I stumbled across a site devoted to the seven sorrows rosary of Our Lady (click here).  This site talked about the promises that Our Lady made to Marie Claire when she appeared to her at Kibeho, Rwanda. (this apparition of Our Lady was approved by the church in 2001). Marie Claire spoke of how Our Lady urged a return to the practice of reciting the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady rosary. I nearly fell over when I read one of the promises….”Those who prayed it from the heart would be freed from obsessions and addictions.” She was talking about me!

I decided to pray a seven sorrows rosary and a normal rosary every day for 40 days. This was either pious well meaning nonsense or it was true. I don’t believe that our Blessed Mother would lie, so I decided to try it. I prayed to Our Lady, “either this is true, or just pious nonsense. My Mother, I will pray the seven sorrows rosary daily for forty days, if your promise is true, please free me from my addiction to lust. If you set me free I will promise to promote the Seven Sorrows Rosary”

I noticed straight away that the sexual temptations decreased remarkably to the point that I could control my urges. After about two weeks, I noticed a large article in our daily newspaper about the official exorcist of the archdiocese of Brisbane. I thought that my addiction could be demonic in nature so I contacted this priest and made a time to see him. He led me into the chapel and prayed the deliverance prayer over me. I felt very peaceful (no head turnings or projectile vomiting) and felt that God had done something major in my life.

I went to mass later that evening and the gospel was about Jesus casting a demon out of a man but the Pharisees claimed that Jesus had done this by the power of Beelzebub. On top of that, the priest (not the one who prayed for me) gave a homily about an exorcism he had performed in Malaysia.  I have been attending mass for over 50 years, but had never before heard a priest give a homily on exorcism! I felt the Lord was saying to me “Yes, your deliverance was real and I have set you free. This great grace was given to you because of the intercession of My Mother”.

It has been over four months now and my freedom is real. I am not plagued by sexual thoughts as I used to be and rarely think about sex now, whereas before it dominated my thoughts. As I said to my exorcist priest, “I feel as free as a bird. Life is great again and I thank Jesus and Mary from the bottom of my heart”

I would encourage anyone who is in bondage to sin, to pray the two rosaries daily for 40 days. I have found Our Lady’s promises to be real and to be trusted. Please try it. It is God’s will that you be set free because He loves you dearly. You have nothing to lose and everything (your freedom and eternal salvation) to gain.
